Air and Vapour Barrier Membrane Evaluations

The air/vapour barrier membrane is the largest component on the building air/vapour barrier system, which has numerous seams and connections that can all be sources of air, moisture, and water leaks. A poorly planned and installed air/vapour barrier membrane can turn a high performance building into an energy intensive building with poor thermal comfort, indoor air quality, and durability.

IBES provides a range of services to make sure the air/vapour membrane creates a continuous barrier throughout the building that is properly connected to all the exterior wall components (e.g. windows and doors).  Building inspections are used to verify proper membrane installation and identify discrepancies that require corrections.  Available testing services investigate the adhesion strength of the membrane to the exterior sheathing and identify areas where air or water leaks are present

All tests are conducted  in accordance with well-known and accepted industry testing standard procedures.  Examples of some utilized testing standards are:

  • ASTM E1186 Air Leakage Site Detection in Building Envelopes
  • ASTM D4541 Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Strength of Coatings using Portable Adhesion Tester
